With over 50,000 feet of warehousing, Trevor Taylor, managing director of Tomoana Warehousing Ltd, needs a reliable and faultless fire protection system.
From smoke alarms to a sprinkler system and fire hoses, there is a lot of space to protect, and the $1.5 million project was awarded to Electrotech because of the company’s expertise, demonstrated ability to deliver and competitive pricing.
“I was looking for a local company who could undertake the big projects and confidently manage the ongoing testing and maintenance work. We had previous experience of other Tech Group services with voice, audio and air conditioning systems installed in our offices, so I felt confident that Electrotech would be up for this challenge,” said Trevor.
It took two months to install the entire system, one of largest of its type in Hawke’s Bay, in the main 40,000 square metre warehouse. A diesel fired pump is used to supply the sprinklers and an alarm connects directly to the Hastings Fire Service.
Operating out of a 10inch bore, the system pumps 3000 litres of water per minute through 560 metres of feeder pipe into 4500 sprinkler heads. One section of the warehouse has 5000 square metres of pallets stacked eight high, with sprinklers through the supporting racking.
The project was completed on time without any issues or delays. The system is now checked weekly, monthly and quarterly to meet insurance compliance requirements.
